Oi gentes!

I’d love to share with you a little story. In my teens, I had perfect skin; no blemishes or black heads. As a matter a fact, that was my identifier in grade school and all through out University “Perfect Pretty Skin.” I can’t take any credit for it though. I owe it all to two people; my loving mother, a 20 year licensed esthetician  and my late grandmother, a dermatologist.

My mother’s mom is European, she had dark ash blond hair and green eyes with light olive skin complexion and her skin was flawless. My mother is in her mid 50′s and her skin is flawless.

I remember the stories my mom would share with me about her youth. She’d watch her mother create and experiment with all matter of things such as mashed up fruit, borax and dried rose petals in the kitchen. And she would test skin care products that my grandmother invented. My mother took those secret recipes, tips and tricks and developed it into a small skin care line in the late 80′s.

I was very young when I started to test products for my mother to use for her skin care spa as well as her skin care line. It did not take a lot of effort on my part to try skin care products. I trusted my mother’s experience and knowledge about the skin and skin care. She really knew her stuff.

Now as an adult, most of my free time is consumed by research. I spend so much time reading books, medical journals, aesthetic journals and women’s magazines about how to create smooth supple skin, how to prevent wrinkles, how to fight acne prone skin, how to diminish signs of aging, etc. etc.

In 2010, I decided to take all this research and apply it towards a more formal atmosphere. I debated whether or not I should return to University and complete a medical degree in Dermatology or shall I study to be a licensed esthetician?

I chose the latter, for I am 100% a Makeup Artist in heart, passion and trade and I only wanted to supplement my career not change it.

I studied in between consultations, beauty seminars, photo shoots, fashion shows, interviews, and my beauty channel. In April 2011, I completed and passed both the written and practical cosmetology state board exams in the current state I live in and am now a licensed esthetician.

My mother’s already super proud of my makeup artistry skills and how far I’ve come. She is very proud of the fact that I chose to study her line of career and passion. Estheticians are licensed skin care specialist that work with the epidermis or horny layer of the skin. Here is a wikki description of what an Esthetician is, respectfully. Estheticians are the therapist to your skin. Furthermore, there is so much studying required to understand all the layers of the skin such as different skin types, diseases, safety and sanitation practices, anatomy of the face and I could go on…

So much more knowledge and practice is mandated than I thought before I entered into that educational and time commitment. Now I have even more respect for the work that my mother has done for over 20 years.
